The roof of the castle is now slated but between the 13th and 16th centuries the roof would have been covered in thick reeds and other local materials then it would have been thatched with straw possibly as late as the mid 19th century when slate finally became standard use.

At each end of the roof there are what look like stone steps that rise to the top, they are called "Crow Steps" and were used as an aid to climb to the top while attaching the reeds and thatch.

Think of it as a medieval step ladder.
